* * * * * * * * *

On guru Nanaka Birthday that is 14th Nov
Re: On guru Nanaka Birthday that is 14th Nov
Jai Shri Mata ji
Jai Shri Mata ji
DearFamily :-)
..some stories for u on Guru Nanaka's Birthday Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the Khatri mystic and poet and founder of the Sikh religion, was born in 1469 A.D. in the village of Talwandi on the Ravi river, in the Lahore district of Punjab, on one side of the house in which Guru Nanak Dev Ji was born, there stands now the famous shrine called" Nankana sahib"GuruNanak has been called the "Prophet of the Punjab and Sind", Nanak's father was Mehta Kalu Chand, known popularly as Kalu. He was the accountant of the village. He was an agriculturist also. Nanak's mother was Tripta. Even in his childhood , Nanak had a mystic disposition and he used to talk about God with saints. He had a contemplative mind and a pious nature. He began to spend his time in meditation and spiritual practices. He was , by habit, reserved in nature. When Nanak was a boy of seven , he was sent to Gopal Pandha to learn hindi. The teacher told Nanak to read a book. Nanak replied" what will it avail to know all and not have a knowledge of God?" Then the teacher wrote the Hindi alphabets for him on a wooden slate. Nanak said to the teacher, " Please tell me, Sir, what books have you studied? What is the extent of your knowledge?" Gopal Pandha replied. " I know mathematics and accounts necessary for shopkeeping", Nanak replied , "This knowledge will not in any way help you in obtaining freedom".The teacher was very astonished at the words of the boy. He told him, "Nanak tell me something which could help me in the attainment of salvation", Nanak said, "O teacher! Burn worldly love, make its ashes into ink and make the intellect into a fine paper. Now make the love of God your pen, and your heart the writer, and under the instructions of your Guru, write and meditate. Write the name of the lord and His praises and write, He has no limit this side or the other, O teacher! Learn to write this account", The teacher was struck with wonder. The kalu sent his son to Pundit Brij Nath to learn Sanskrit. The Pundit wrote for him "OM", Nanak asked the teacher the meaning of "Om", The teacher replied, "You have no business to know the meaning of "Om", now I can not explain to you the meaning of "Om", Nanak said, "O teacher! what is the use of reading without knowing the meaning ? I shall explain to you the meaning of "Om", Then Nanak gave an elaborate explanation of the significance of "Om", The sanskrit Pundit was stuck with amazement.Guru Nanak visited Hassam Abdal in the attock district in the North Western Frontier in 1520 A.D. He sat under a Pipal tree at the foot of a hillock. On top of the hill , there lived a Mohammedan saint named Vali Quandhari. there was then a spring of water on top of the hill. Mardana was thirsty to get water so Guru Nanak sent Mardana for taking water from Vali Quandhari . He forbade Mardana from taking water out of the spring. Mardana informed Guru Nanak of the conduct of the Mohammedan saint. Guru Nanak said to Mardana." O Mardana! Do not be afraid. God will send water down to us soon. saying this he threw a stone on the ground" The spring that was on the top of the hill dried up immediately. There arose a spring at the foot of the hill where Guru Nanak halted . The saint was very much enraged. He hurled a big rock from the top of the hill down to the spot where Nanak was sitting. Guru Nanak stopped the rock by his open palm. The impression of his hand on the rock exists even now. Now in Pakistan. Then the saint came to the Guru, prostrated at his feet and asked for pardon. Guru Nanak smiled and pardoned the arrogant saint. There now stands a beautiful shrine by the side of the spring which is called: " Punja Sahib".Guru Nanak has given a beautiful summary of his teachings in one of his hymns as follows:-Love the saints of every faithPut away thy pride.Remember the essence of religionIs meekness and sympathy. Not fine clothes,Not the Yogi's garb and ashes,Not the blowing of the horns,Not long prayers,Not recitations and torturous,Not the ascetic way,But a life of goodness and purity,Amid the world's temptations."Vahe Guru" is the Guru MantraThat god is the ultimate ! "Vahe Guru"

1 Nov 2008, Saturday we met at 2 pm at Maxim’s cake shop in Sheung Shui train station. There was no registration procedure. But it turned out that over 20 Sahajis showed up and enjoyed the trip
Destination : Nam Chung, which is near the HK and China border, around Sha Tau Kok ( Lok Keung )overlooking the western port of Shengzhen. It takes half an hour by mini bus/bus from Sheung Shui station to Nam Chung. There are a lot of fish ponds. Nam Chung is also famous for bird watching. After about an hour walk, we reached a water gap or a river. Small ponds are created by the water gap. We did foot-soaking and swam in the ponds. Before we said good-bye to each other and dispersed peacefully, we had dinner together at ShunShui.

102. The power of stillness

The power of stillness
By : VIJAYA KASINATHAN 2008/11/03
Studies have found that Sahaja Yoga's meditation techniques are effective in treating a host of ailments, from asthma to mental health. VIJAYA KASINATHAN writes.
Studies have found that Sahaja Yoga's meditation techniques are effective in treating a host of ailments, from asthma to mental health. VIJAYA KASINATHAN writes.
I HAD always wondered about the science of meditation. How it alleviates, and in some cases, even cures certain ailments. What does meditation do to the brain, which in turn tells the body to heal. In other words, the mechanics of it.
I pondered no more after listening to a talk by Dr Ramesh Manocha at Pantai Medical Centre in Kuala Lumpur, recently.
"It all boils down to learning to keep the mind still... When there are no thoughts, the healing takes place," says Dr Ramesh, who has been researching Sahaja Yoga meditation techniques for more than 10 years.
But why did he choose to experiment with Sahaja Yoga?"Health systems all over the world are going broke. Sahaja Yoga is taught free of charge," he said with a laugh.
But on a more serious note, Dr Ramesh said studies on meditation and yoga have been conducted for more than 50 years.
However, the problems with methodology, interpretation of data, inconsistency and inability to reproduce the results of some meditation techniques hampered research findings. That was until he employed Sahaja Yoga meditation techniques.
Dr Ramesh and his team of researchers started experimenting with Sahaja Yoga's meditation techniques after coming across the many experiments of the late Professor U.C. Rai in India.
Prof Rai, who suffered serious angina attacks, was surprised to find that this technique of meditation had alleviated his medical condition.
"Sahaja Yoga is unique as it gives you the experience of mental silence. It is in this state of mental silence that the brain sends signals which facilitate healing in the body," he said.
"A few health workers in Sydney came across Prof Rai's work. The results that he had achieved in conditions ranging from asthma to high blood pressure were encouraging, so we decided to test this technique under scientific conditions in Australia."
With funds from the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners, Dr Ramesh and his team began to research Sahaja Yoga's meditation benefits in treating asthma patients.
"The medical science establishment demands a standard of scientific rigour in order to establish the authenticity of any new form of treatment. After consulting a number of respected asthma researchers a strategy was devised to compare the effect of meditation against a popular relaxation technique," he said.
"There is a difference between meditation and relaxation as this yoga's technique emphasises on mental silence as this is when healing takes place," he explained.
A large number of people suffering from severe asthma who had not responded well even to high doses of medication were divided into two groups.
One group received regular instruction in Sahaja Yoga meditation while the other was taught the relaxation method. The project was completed in 18 months and the results were startling.
"Most of us expected to see no difference between the relaxation and meditation groups. Yet the results clearly showed that while both groups did appear to bring about improvements in the way the patients felt, the meditation group showed improvements in the severity of the disease process itself!".
The meditation techniques were also introduced to patients suffering from depression, anxiety, menopause and headaches at the Royal Hospital for Women in Sydney.
Those who faithfully followed it at the hospital's Natural Therapies Unit showed significant improvement. In some cases, patients had even stopped their medication. Even children with Attention Deficit-Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) were taught this technique with their parents.
"We tested Sahaja techniques on 48 children below 12 with ADHD for six weeks. Again, there were children who stopped their medication; a majority showed significant improvement in their behaviour. One parent even drove 100km to learn more about this meditation because it helped her child."
The effectiveness of Sahaja Yoga are backed by science as opposed to enthusiasts, he said. "We used the highly-acclaimed RCT test."
The RCT or Randomised Controlled Trial is the most acceptable evidence-based research worldwide in health promotion and disease prevention. It ensures that the participants' responses are unbiased.
Dr Ramesh said Sahaja Yoga is especially useful in treating inflammatory ailments but the primary achievement of Sahaja Yoga herein lies in treating what the World Health Organisation (WHO) calls "a major global concern" — mental health.
"According to a WHO report in 2002, 20 per cent of the population will suffer from mental health problems in the 21st century," said Dr Ramesh, an Australian who studied medicine at the University of New South Wales.
Ten per cent of global diseases involve mental health. As many as 450 million people will suffer from a mental or behavioural disorder and nearly one million will commit suicide every year. Also, one in four families will have at least one member with mental disorder.
A worrying trend, as many peoples' lives would be spiralling out of control."People tend to think too much and for the wrong reasons. Even when they don't have a problem, they create one by digging into the mind's archive and start worrying unnecessarily.
"The report also stated that by 2020, depression will become the second leading cause of disease burden worldwide.
Another major contributor to mental disorders is occupational stress.
"Occupational stress in the US is costing the government US$2 billion (about RM6.4 billion) while in British, the cost is estimated at £17.5 billion (about RM108 billion) each year," said Dr Ramesh.
In many developed countries, between 35 and 45 per cent of absenteeism from work is due to occupational stress.
In the US, the loss of work days because of occupational stress is 13.4 million a year.
"People these days find it hard to deal with stress, their emotions, and have a false sense of self-esteem. They need to be taught to handle the negative thoughts and feelings that plague them.
"Though medication is available, WHO is looking for low-cost solutions to fight mental illness, said Dr Ramesh.
"Even if you charge five cent for an anti-depressant, that's cost. That is why Sahaja Yoga is highly recommended because our research has shown that it is good for preventing mental illness.
"Those who experienced the state of mental silence even a few times a week had better mental health than the general population," said Dr Ramesh.
Sahaja Yoga, which is based on scientific principles, was introduced by its founder Shri Mataji Nirmala Devi Srivastava in 1970. Shri Mataji, 85, a Nobel prize nominee, also studied medicine.
Sahaja Yoga is practised in almost 90 countries. It is also taught in some South American universities as an activity. Closer to home, Astro's Vaanavil, Wai Lai Toi and AEC channels also showcased Sahaja Yoga's meditation techniques.
